Anna Hoi Thi Ngo was born on January 2, 1948, at Bac Ninh, Vietnam. She was the second child and eldest daughter of ten siblings. In 1954, the family moved to the South and resided at Rach Gia, An Giang, and joined An Son Parish. Since childhood, Anna Hoi was encouraged by her parents to participate actively in church activities, prayers and Marian Associations.

In 1963, Anna Hoi married Joseph Lap Au and eventually moved to the City of Thu Duc, where she joined the Sacred Heart Parish. They were blessed with six children - Tien, Hoa, Huyen, Dung, Ha, and Nguyet.
